Ladies of Charity
The Ladies of Charity is an international organization founded by St. Vincent DePaul and St. Louise DeMarillac in France around 1617. Its mission is to provide physical, emotional and spiritual aid and comfort to those in need – most particularly the elderly, the poor and those suffering a death in their family. The Ladies of Charity of St. Bernadette Parish was established in 1979 by Fr. Boyle. It ministers to the Parish in a number of ways by visiting members of the parish in the local hospitals, nursing homes and those who are home-bound. They attend wake services and funerals thereby showing a visible sign of support to grieving families. They also operate a monthly parish food pantry and special projects throughout the year. While the activities primarily focus on the members of our own parish community, assistance is extended to anyone in times of emergency. The goal of The Ladies of Charity is to actively pursue the practice of the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in the spirit of Jesus Christ.

The Knights of Columbus are Catholic men who try to make a difference in this world by being Men of God. We serve Him by serving humanity through service to His Church. We are part of the largest Catholic men’s fraternal organization on earth – 1.8 million strong.
What the Knights do:
We support the Pro-Life cause in all its stages, from conception to natural death. Our largest effort is through Project Rosebud which joins with Birthright of Pittsburgh and the East Suburban Infant Jesus Respect Life Committee (RLC) to provide material and emotional support to financially abandoned, abortion-minded mothers-to-be. This support begins one month before the expected delivery date, and ends when the child is one year old. In addition to home visits by Knights, their spouses and RLC members, we raise money to purchase needed furniture, clothes, and baby supplies. From 2008 through the present, we have assisted fourteen moms.
We support Religious Vocations by providing a monthly stipend to local seminarians to assist them with expenses.
We collect thousands of dollars each year for the K of C Bishop’s Project which is used to help children or adults with mental, physical, or developmental problems in the St. Anthony School Program and at the McGuire Memorial Home. You’ll see us at shopping centers passing out Tootsie Rolls for donations, at Masses collecting ”pennies,” and selling Christmas seals to raise funds for this charity.
At Christmas time each year we purchase and deliver baskets of food to needy families in our parish and adjoining ones.
We provide free educational and religious booklets on the Faith that you see in the vestibule of the church. We purchase over 1000 of these each year.
We provide stimulus funds to help local parishes for costly projects. Recently we provided funds for half the cost of new the St. Bernadette sound system. We have also assisted other local parishes with funds to assist with needed repairs or facility improvements.
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month.

What is the purpose of the Pastoral Council?
Bishop Zubik has instructed each pastor in the diocese to form a lay parish Pastoral Council. This leadership body is charged with studying the total picture of parish life. Through consultation with the pastor and prayerful discernment, Pastoral Council makes recommendations to enhance the life and growth of the parish community.
How can our Pastoral Council help you to grow in your faith at St. Bernadette Parish?
We want to hear from you! We invite you to share your reflections with us at any time. We are most interested in your thoughts about how the Pastoral Council can assist you to grow in your faith and how we can plan together for a vibrant faith community for years to come.
Please share your reflections with us via email at PastoralCouncil@stbrnadet.org
